Fields of Application
Elcalcitonin is a synthetic polypeptide analogue of salmon calcitonin I. It lowers the calcium concentration in plasma of mammals by diminishing the rate of bone resorption. It prevents the release of calcium and phosphorous into blood by inhibiting the osteoclasts, a cell type that “digests” bone matrix.
It is obtained by chemical synthesis and it is available as acetate.
Calcitonins are used to treat severe hypercalcemia of various origins, Paget’s disease, osteoporosis of various origins, and intractable cancer pain in patients with malignant bone metastases.
