Octreotide is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring hormone known as somatostatin. Octreotide has similar effects on the body, but acts for a longer period of time than somatostatin.

Octreotide is used to treat severe diarrhea and other symptoms that occur with certain cancers of the intestine.

Octreotide also reduces the amount of growth hormone in the body, and so it is also used to treat acromegaly, a condition associated with overgrowth of hands, feet, and parts of the face caused by too much growth hormone.

Octreotide is also used for emergency treatment of particular causes of stomach and esophagus bleeding.
